John 15:26-16:15

It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7

Last week, we recognized Pentecost and the arrival of God’s Holy Spirit in the lives of the disciples and in the view of the world. This event is foreshadowed in this chapter in the gospel of John. Here, we see not only the promise of Jesus that the Holy Spirit would enter into the lives of the disciples, but also the kind of work that he will accomplish when he arrives. Particularly, there is the specific work of the Spirit in guiding the followers of Jesus into the truth they need so that they are able to bear witness about Jesus in their own lives. It is through the Spirit that we find the guidance that we need to share Christ in a world that does not know Jesus or identify with him.
